May 2008 Education Newsletter

May is a lovely month to celebrate Mothering in all her glorious forms. From birds being born in cozy nests to blooms birthing through the soil, May reminds us to honor and tend those who give and share their lives with us. As a time of flux and feeling flowing with the seasonal changes that continue to roil, May is also a lovely time to explore poetry with children as a way to express and experience the joys, pains and pleasures of life.

The OneWomansMind.net Education Newsletter will be taking a summer hiatus from June through August returning in September with the annual Top 10 Lists, homeschool class offerings and seasonal favorites.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to be put on a first notice email list regarding class availability and information.

Wishing you and the Women in your life a beautiful Mother's Day this May. Thank you Mothers for your valiance and love that is growing our world.

Best wishes for a fun and magical summer,

Paula Vaughan

embracing the extraordinary through story

Please Note
All exploration ideas and discussion suggestions can be tailored to fit the age and needs of your child or group. Ages given are guidelines only. For children who are not yet reading, adults can listen, record and transcribe their thoughts. Children love to see their words on paper and hear them read aloud. Having their efforts validated by an adult inspires them to read.

Drawing is an excellent way for children to express their feelings and thoughts about stories they hear. Consider keeping markers, crayons, colored pencils and blank notebooks available. Ask children to draw their favorite part of a story or what meant the most to them. Let them use any colors or medium available with no boundaries. When a child begins to draw, they are expressing their vision and understanding. You will be delighted and amazed at childrens' inherent brilliance and what they can teach you as well.

Children's Picture Books Reviews and Exploration Ideas

Unbeatable Beaks by Stephen R. Swinburne, illustrated by Joan Paley is a feast for the eyes and ears. Inspired by the rhytmic pounding of a woodpecker, Swinburne penned a poem dedicated to the varied and remarkable bird beaks and the animals who own them. Describing the purpose and unique ability of several types of beaks, Swinburne employs powerful action words that capture the attention and drive his intention home. Joan Paley created mixed media life-like collages of large, bright and bold bird images that are an educational delight for elementary ages. Swinburne includes a bird to beak matching activity and ends his book with brief but detailed paragraphs about each bird included. Unbeatable Breaks is a joyful introductory exploration of birds, offering poetry and science wrapped together in a colorful package.

Once I Ate a Pie by Patricia MacLachlan, Emily MacLachlan Charest, and illustrated by Katy Schneider is a delightful, masterful work of sublime blank verse poetry. Written for dog lovers yet able to defy bounds of age, preference or even pet ownership, Once I Ate a Pie is pure beauty in the authors' obvious love and mastery of word usage and consideration of subject. The word choice is juicy and deliberate complimented by Schneider's stunning paintings that honor canines and their unique and varied personalities. Fonts are used to maneuver carefully chosen text to highlight each dog's personality and longings. Simple yet profound, I found myself often brought to tears humbled by the talent and message of the authors and illustrators. Once I Ate a Pie will become a cherished addition to your poetry collection. And, if you happen to check it out, Mr. Beefy is my favorite. He is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.
