April 2008 Education Newsletter

April is Spring in bloom and an exceptional time to celebrate the Earth and what we can do at home to conserve, create and protect backyard wildlife habitats. Sharing exploration and discovery with our children is as simple as visiting the backyard, turning over a rock or two and sitting still, watching and observing Nature. April is a wonderful time to plant a garden - any kind, vegetable, butterfly, flower, shade - whatever you love - and welcome the wild ones to your home. Every effort to bring back the wilds helps heal the planet and offers our children exceptional examples of how to lovingly steward Nature.

Each Monday I am posting two phenomenal children's picture books on my blog. Please stop by and visit for reading ideas and suggestions. If you have a favorite, please let me know! Visit Mythology and Motherhood: recovering the forest for the trees for Phenomenal Book ideas updated weekly.

Please join me in honoring the Earth this April and always.

Best wishes,

Paula Vaughan

Please Note
All exploration ideas and discussion suggestions can be tailored to fit the age and needs of your child or group. Ages given are guidelines only. For children who are not yet reading, adults can listen, record and transcribe their thoughts. Children love to see their words on paper and hear them read aloud. Having their efforts validated by an adult inspires them to read.

Drawing is an excellent way for children to express their feelings and thoughts about stories they hear. Consider keeping markers, crayons, colored pencils and blank notebooks available. Ask children to draw their favorite part of a story or what meant the most to them. Let them use any colors or medium available with no boundaries. When a child begins to draw, they are expressing their vision and understanding. You will be delighted and amazed at childrens' inherent brilliance and what they can teach you as well.

Children's Picture Books Reviews and Exploration Ideas

Who Lives in an Alligator Hole? by Anne Rockwell, illustrated by Lizzy Rockwell is a fantastic addition to the Let's Read and Find Out Science Series 1 and 2. Mother and daughter wonder team, the Rockwells deliver an informative, yet gently illustrated, lesson about environmental conservation and the importance of each and every creature to an ecosystem. Using the Alligator, Florida's most famous reptile, as their example the Rockwells explain the concept of a keystone species which vitally impacts various other animals, both predators and prey, in addition to the health and natural balance of wetland habitats. Helping readers understand the intentional efforts made to bring the Alligator back from near-extinction, children are given hope and empowered to realize that they can individually make a difference in helping the planet and all her inhabitants. Who Lives in an Alligator Hole? offers non-threatening, timely, relevant information about environmental awareness that educates and inspires.

Discussion and Exploration Ideas

Where Butterflies Grow by Joanne Ryder, illustrated by Lynne Cherry is a lushly detailed caterpillar-view of becoming a butterfly. Dwelling in a meadow surrounded by gorgeous wildflowers and small creatures, author Joanne Ryder spins a story in second person narrative so that the reader feels and understands the metamorphosis of a Black Swallowtail caterpillar - they are the caterpillar. Slowly and peacefully, capturing the quiet stillness of a garden, Ryder guides the reader through the phenomenal changes the caterpillar experiences paying fine attention to clarity and carefully choosing words that make the reader feel they are a miniature meadow resident. Lynne Cherry's illustrations are breathtaking and invite children to peek around every corner and look under each leaf. Where Butterflies Grow is a rare, beautiful and educational journey.

Creative Writing and Telling Inspiration

Join your child in finding a tree either in your backyard or neighborhood. Take a blanket and note pad and invite your child to sit with the tree a while, exploring, feeling and just being next to the tree. Ask your child to write a piece about the tree - poem, story, song - anything they love expressing how the tree makes them feel, what creatures live within the tree, how the tree changes the landscape - any idea that inspires them.

Articles and Interest for Preteens, Teens to Adults

Nature selflessly gives, enduring and releasing change, hardship, joy, love, and bounty. Nature is an inspiration for she is us. Please enjoy reading poetry and prose about Nature's wonders - Natural Wisdom: passages about the solace, peace and wisdom found within nature.
